The Sierra Club Youth Group includes over half a dozen families at this time. Parents accompany children on the nature walks and camping trips so that these events can become meaningful family time.
Unlike scouting and other similar nature-oriented groups, the Sierra Club Youth Group is co-ed, and, therefore, children who join get the opportunity to make friends regardless of gender.
The Sierra Club Youth Group began in the fall of 2007, and it has met every month since then. It has been fortunate to have noted experts as guests at our nature walks, such as Professor Robert Dowler, a biologist who specializes in mammals; Professor Delbert Tarter, a Texas birding expert; Ms. Ellen Groth, a representative from the Upper Colorado River Authority; and Mr. Dan Brown, the proprietor of the Hummer House, a famous hummingbird breeding site.
The Sierra Club Youth Group is currently planning to begin an adopt-a-spot project in San Angelo.
Dr. Linda Kornasky-Hama is the current director. She is a professor of English at Angelo State University, where she teaches courses in nature writing and other environmentallly relevant topics in American literature.
